It was in May of 2007 when the Nuts campaign kicked off to save Jericho from certain death. I had only one week before began tearing through the episodes online, basking in the warm glow of being able to watch what I wanted on demand and at the cost of only a couple of short commercials. Jericho was my kind of show; it had action that was based in a compelling reality and larger than life characters who somehow seemed excruciatingly human. It was an actor’s action adventure with thoughtful writing set in a part of the country where hit shows never showed their face.

So, I guess I was kind of naïve to think that my affection for the show would be shared by enough Nielsen families to keep it on the air. Almost a week to the day after discovering Jericho there I was, discovering it had been cancelled and spelunking into my first ever forum. The CBS Jericho forum was something of a cave. There were trolls there and helpful spirits and much like the show that its inhabitants had gathered to celebrate, there was grace under pressure. One of the most gracious and indeed graceful folks there went by the name of Schumi. She had a way with words and gave the group a focus that I honestly doubt would have been possible without her. She was one of those people who is in the right place and time to make a difference and then does. She let a calm head prevail and placed her faith in the polite and well spoken. I was impressed with her then and remain so two years down the line.

She was the first of many strong women I would come to realize were at the helm of the save Jericho Campaign.

Fellow Rangers today is the Big Day. Jericho Returns to Network Television to the CW for what we all hope is a 29 week run of Season 1 and 2 straight through the end of May 2009.

As I said in my original post in Operation Phoenix following the Ranger Meeting at UHD on November 20th, this is all about the numbers, Nielsen and Feedback letters and comments via the feedback forms.
.
Back on November 8th we started out to get Jericho back into the forefront as we were gearing up to launch the TV AD on UHD which begins tomorrow on UHD Network for a 4 week run. Thanks to Norsu we found out that CBS had put Season 1 out on Youtube. We decided to include that as part of our marketing strategy to get people watching Jericho again in as many forums as possible including UHD and Youtube. We began our campaign of post to community, college, scifi Boards, social networks like Face Book and Myspace to try and get the word out that Jericho was not dead but was still a very viable show.

I had set some goals with regard to numbers, with getting 50,000 people to view Jericho on Youtube by December 14 and hitting 10,000 posts on the UHD Board by November 30. Both of these goals have been reached. Both are significant numbers as we are starting to see the grass roots movement pick up speed. Like a wave that starts out slowly and continues to build until it finally crests we want to see the numbers continue to climb each week during the 29 week run on the CW, on UHD and the UHD Board and on Youtube.

This is different than any Campaign we have undertaken before, Our Goals are simple, we need to get people to sit down and watch Jericho on the CW, right now we are focusing on getting the word out that the show is starting with the Pilot on November 30, 2008 on the CW at 7:00pm EST.

Once the show starts we need to send CBS and CW Feedback via the Feed back forms.

We are also sending our letters and cards to Nancy Tellem (CBS Paramount) and Bonnie Hammer (NBC Universal) each Monday and to Dawn Ostroff (CW) and D'Arcy Rudnay at Comcast each Thursday. The purpose is 2 fold, one make a business argument to continue the show and the second is to get our collective voices recorded and counted.

We are dealing with finance and numbers people (bean counters) plain and simple.

I know that Dark Crystal and Rat Keeper have some ideas about doing better feedback letters so check out JNET and JKI. Important information to give is your age, gender, household size, profession what are your television viewing habits and your desire that CBS put Jericho back on the air with a movie and new episodes.

It has a been a long road and many have come and gone since March 2008, but with CBS putting the show on the CW we have a real chance to speak directly to the Executives and Bean counters at CBS Paramount, NBC Universal, Comcast and other Networks that Jericho is a viable, money making commodity worth continuing.
.
Make no mistake about it all of our efforts have made a difference, the Bill Board and TV Ads have caught the Executives attention, or realistically Jericho would not be on UHD nor would the CW be putting back on the air. But it is the simple things that will win the day and take only a few minutes time.

Each Sunday complete the Feedback Form for CBS and The CW. Each Monday and Thursday send out your post cards or letters. Watch Jericho each week on the CW and UHD if you can and spread the word and help continue the Jericho wave to grow in strength until it crashes over the Seawall into the CBS Paramount Offices and results in their decision to continue the Jericho story.

Every body who has been a part of this community, no matter if they joined the UHD Board last week or have been here since 2006 has contributed. Although it was Dark and all seemed Lost there were a core of people who kept the torch going over the summer and into the Fall.

I for one am glad that I stuck around to see what is Happening. Jericho is on 2 Networks, THE CW and UHD (NBC Universal), our TV AD is playing on UHD for 4 weeks, New people are Discovering the show and old ones are reconnecting. Jericho Lives into the Spring of 2009.

Jericholinks.com had become something of a museum piece with many of its own links leading to dead internet ends but the text based page is a perfect candidate for viewing via the internet archive and its way back machine.

It appears ABC has cancelled Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone and Pushing Daisy’s while 4 more episodes of Life on Mars have been ordered and the show will move to Wednesday at ten following Lost which simply must be a better timeslot for a time traveling cop show than following Grey’s Anatomy. I hope the audience follows and grows

BUT the big news this week is that the CW will begin re-airing the episodic, post apocalyptic, fan favorite Jericho on Sunday nights. This news, coupled with the recent lockout of fans from the CBS Jericho board has some speculating that the 2 events are somehow linked. Stay Tuned...

I am not even a huge Elton John Fan but to mark these potentially significant occasions I have chosen his words twice now. I cannot Imagine why this would be, so, I looked him up on wikipedia and found EJ's life and career to be a wild ride through the full spectrum of experience.

This has also been the case for me with the Jericho community. It has been a truly wild ride and I am drained by it all to the point of no longer feeling much of anything.

Simply stated, this is a now journey that for me has reached a natural conclusion. I admit I stubbornly held onto my vision for our cause longer than perhaps I should have. Truth be told it was never my vision that mattered. All that really matters, in my estimation, is that despite the constant nagging evidence of our fragile and individual humanity we changed the world as though we were one.

The Return of Friday Night Lights

Today is the day that Friday Night Lights Returns.

The show died a quiet death during its second season on NBC after the writers strike but was given a second life through a deal between Direct TV and NBC. Each are paying a portion of the shows reduced production costs and direct TV gets the rights to air the show a full quarter year before NBC.

The first of 13 new episodes is airing tonight.

Congratulations to the Cast, Crew, Direct TV, NBC and the Fans of Friday Night Lights.

I just stopped by Trish Kates TV Talk to learn that she too has reached the end of her Jericho blogging road.

Great Job Trish! I liked your blog, it was smart and informative and I consider its loss to be yet another sad occasion for the Jericho Fandom.

I do not know why Trish Kate left us but I did watch on at least one occasion as she got into hot water with some over her opinions. To which I say that it is part of a bloggers job to put themselves out there and post their opinions.

If the bloggers say what they think needs to be said and the readers are willing to hang in there, post comments and make their voices heard and all of this is done in a respectful manner then a blog can become a place of real dialogue for a fandom. Bloggers may not have to play by the same rules of neutrality as a paid reporter but I think most bloggers feel an obligation to the truth. Sometimes this truth reveals itself to us in dialogue and sometimes that dialogue is best served by being kept off of the message boards where the new fans turn up. It is difficult, when writing repeatedly about a subject to not interject our own beliefs but one thing is for certain; if a blogger is willing to risk the ire of their readers to make a point then it is fair to say it is a point that is most probably on the minds of others as well and at least worth discussing. But all parties must be willing to keep coming to the table with the attitude that not one of us holds a copyright on the truth. A fandom is a community and no community can exist without communication. This lately, our communication in the Jericho fandom is down and like a flame deprived of oxygen we are gasping for breath.

In our community many have left and moved on and many of those who remain have given up on one another.

This is the truth as I see it.

Parenting on the edge of apocalypse

”Hi Dale, Sorry I didn’t call sooner angel but we decided to stay in the city an extra couple of days”.

These words spoken by Dale Turners mother hold such deep clues about the troubled teen. The fact that she did not call sooner, that she calls him “angel” and that she and her companion have chosen to stay in the city longer without informing Dale all are relevant to Dale’s character. What a bold choice to imply that the mother is so flawed in such an ordinary way. You can almost hear the Jericho town gossips volleying versions of “That boy thinks the world of her while she is out gallivanting all over Hell and Creation with the flavor of the week.”

Why would I say that? Well, I think it is fascinating how in the six or so lines of the phone message left by Dale’s mom we get such a clear vision of who she was. She went away and apparently was due back but decided to stay in Atlanta with a man she seems to barely know. I say this because the man is so clueless to Dale’s mothers (Let’s call her Evelyn) situation. Evelyn has to tell (We’ll call him Bob) Bob to hush when he loudly proclaims she should come back to bed. Evelyn tells Bob she is on the phone with her kid. To me this says that Dale has never met Bob. She did not say: “I am on the phone with Dale”. The wording in this short tragic phone message blows me away.

Of all of the possible pet names a mother could have for a child the one Evelyn chooses for Dale is Angel. Angels are symbols of highest good and in this case I believe she calls Dale angel in order to emphasize that between the two of them she feels Dale is the good one. It is amazing how our actions eat us up inside and it is amazing too how we often will indirectly communicate that.

I know someone who grew up with a single parent who put their needs before the child. That person’s life was changed when a stepfather entered the scene and brought with him stability. There is no telling the particulars of Evelyn’s situation. Dale never mentions a father so for some reason it seems he is out of the picture. Was Evelyn Turner a selfish woman? Was she hoping to find a father figure for Dale, happiness for herself and someone to help pay the bills? Was she an escapist seeking to slip through the shackles of reality, if only for a couple of days? Whoever she was Dale loved her very much and as a viewer I love Evelyn Turner too. Because in her brief appearance in the Jericho story she helped build a foundation of believability appropriate to a show whose title is the name of a town. She is an anchor of reality in what is to become a really fantastic story. She is part of what keeps Jericho honest.

Evelyn's choice to stay in Atlanta an extra couple of days proved fatal in the end but I choose not to let this detail sprout wings and fly off to the mythic realm of symbolism. Rather, I will let it stand as a reminder that life is fragile, unpredictable, complicated and sometimes very,very sad.

The moment I knew I had never seen a show like Jericho was when Dale Turner crossed the cluttered side street to the double wide he shares with his single mom and opens the door to the world they share. A world so there it dares you doubt it; an environment so complex it feels both familiar and foreign. Familiar because it speaks to the intimacy of home and foreign because that intimacy has been so adroitly captured that we almost feel as though we are trespassing. On the counter in the middle of everything there is an answering machine with the red new message light flashing slowly on and off in time like a cursor.

It is later that evening. Dale is slumped at the counter. The sun has gone down. He plays the message.
.
Dale’s Mother:”Hi Dale, Sorry I didn’t call sooner angel but we decided to stay in the city an extra couple of days”.

Mans Voice: “Put down the phone and come to bed”.

Dale’s Mother:” Honey stop that, it’s my kid…Baby what are you staring at out the window?”

Mans voice: “Get over here and look at this”!

Dale’s Mother: “What is that? Oh my god… Oh my god…”

The message ends with shattering glass cut short.

And our understanding of Dale Turner has increased by tenfold.

Jericho - The One that got away

Too skinny for Jimmy and too tall for Bill...

The title above may read a little differently than I mean it and that is intentional. This post is dedicated to those moments in Jericho that for one reason or another simply did not work for me:

Item: When Stanley says “No ones been around for five years” referring to Jakes absence. The way the line is said it could just as easily mean no one has been present for five years. Sometimes this type of thing is the actors fault and sometimes it is the writers. In this case I would say the line could have been written better.

Item: When Hawkins tells the sheriff to consider using black spray paint to cover the word Jericho on the side of his car. I get Hawkins’s reason for saying it but it feels entirely like a line which was thrown in for effect to me.

Item: When Johnston trails off after telling Jake what he put the family through in their first meeting after Jakes return. This is one of those dot, dot, dot lines meaning an ellipsis is at the end of the line in a script. These are truly up to the actor to make work and I did not get the sense of history the line was meant to convey.

Item: John Smith’s miraculous escape from Jake who had the element of surprise and was standing practically at point blank range. Much of “Patriots and Tyrants” felt rushed and silly to me but that moment was just terrible. It is probably my least favorite moment in Jericho.

Item: The way that Jimmy and Bills uniforms somehow managed to perfectly fit the two convicts who stole them in Fallout.

Item: The bizarre guitar music during the shoot out with the fake cops mentioned above. Just a moment after this we see the first drops of rain turn into a deluge on the storm cellar door in a brilliant shot emphasizing how Jericho could be a completely different show at any given moment.

These were just off the top of my head. It is interesting that what I tend to remember as bad is either in the beginning of the series when the show is finding itself or in the end when it is trying to quickly wrap the story up. Does anyone out there have any moments that got away for them? Care to add them to the list?

What has become of Jericho Times?

Does anyone out there have any information on the status of this valuable networking tool for the Jericho Community? I know that Jason, who published the times, went thru bouts where he was feeling overwhelmed by a combination of real life and the demands of the newsletter and I remember several months ago he asked for help with the newsletter and did not recieve much of a response. Since that time Jason's 2 jericho based blogs and the Jericho Times home page have stood still. Did Jason Get burned or burnt out? Do we know? Do we care?

For those of you who have not heard, there is a new Jericho podcast in town and I highly recommend it. It is called Future Traditions and its thought provoking name hints at the exploratory nature of the shows content. Despite some minimal first show jitters the hosts, Larissa, Heidi and Suzanne (Hope I spelled those right) have a great time discussing the Jericho Pilot in depth. They each bring something different to the conversation and their individual insights serve to spur one another on to further topics of discussion. So much so that when they say they have exhausted the topic of the Jericho Pilot I do not really believe them.
.
Heidi’s Jericho News segment is delivered in a warmly traditional news anchor fashion. In all but a few moments she commands her material admirably and speaks with an authority which says “I can be trusted”. She has a nice voice for news.
.
A Fan fiction reading by Suzanne is also included in this first episode. Suzanne mentions her students at one point and it made me wonder if she is not used to reading aloud. She settles into the short story by Piratescribe nicely. The story itself is a study of interactions within the Richmond family. Several times I caught myself thinking a remark or gesture was completely in character; Very well done.

The format of Future Traditions seems loose enough so as to have some room to grow. The host’s encourage participation by the fan community in the form of feedback and ideas for the show. I am really looking forward to seeing how this will evolve over time.

Jonah and the Whale

In the back room of the Body Shop, behind a desk, sits the Boss. His name is Jonah A. Prowse or Jonah E. Prowse depending on who you talk to and if he had any idea I was up here writing about him he would hurt me in some way. Don’t get me wrong, he is no Tony Soprano, he would not take a meat cleaver to my fingers but he is not afraid to scar you to make his point. The Boss likes to control his image. He’s a smiling man but he reserves the right to go all straight faced on you at any moment and to fix those eyes of his so you cannot look away.

In the Body Shop there is a hierarchy. There are those who know and those who do. I do. Sounds like I am at a wedding, I know but joining Jonahs gang is a little like getting married. And just like in a marriage you do not get to know how deep you are in the shit until it is too late. Still, I have no desire to leave. Truth is, most of us here are either orphans for real or by choice. Jonah is smart to take in the lost boys but I never feel like I am taken for granted. Hell, even Mitch Cafferty, who is a first class ass, knew Jonah would come over and bail him out of Jericho. We are not allowed to mention Mitch now. Jonah said he left the family and opened the floor for questions. No one asked any and Jonah said we had had our chance and now he did not want to hear another word about old M.C. I am glad he is gone. I hope he doesn’t come back.

Jonah is the smartest man I know. He can tell you something about anything. He is not book smart really but just smart at figuring out the way things work. He had that Major Beck who has taken over Jericho pegged almost immediately. I heard him tell Nate that Beck would show up one day to shake his hand and damn if he didn’t drive right up in a hummer and put his hand out. We were all there. Beck said he had heard a lot about Jonah and wanted to meet the man behind the legend. Then the two of them talked real civil in that nudge, wink, we all know what is goin’ on here way. Beck told Jonah that he had declared amnesty for anyone involved in the New Bern / Jericho War and Jonah said “If I see anyone who was involved I will let them know.” Jonah played it real cool all right, like he had never pulled the trigger out there in that field and took the life of a wounded man, like his daughter hadn’t been watching and like he hadn’t gotten all sad and melancholy afterward.

The boss can be a really sad guy. Sometimes you will see him go stand by the chain link fence and stare over toward Jericho. I mentioned his daughter and that is where she lives. Sometimes I think he shot that guy for her benefit. To say “Look at this war you are determined to fight. Look at what it can turn people into!” Jonah doesn’t make love or war he just makes do. I think that is why he dropped the whole Jericho/ New Bern thing like a hot potato. I think he believes that change is just an opportunity to use your wits and survive. I think change is his religion with reaction to change being sort of a communion. That whole war was too much action and good versus evil for Jonah. He is smart enough to know all of them labels are overated.

Referrals – This tells where the visitor came from on the web. It could be a link to your site on Google or on another search engine or perhaps a link on the web somewhere like for example if someone came to the Junction through the Save Jericho Again site I would be able to tell that.

Out Clicks – This tells where the visitor went after leaving you.

There are many more but I think you get the picture. Site Statistic programs for your blog or website are available for free and their intended use is for a webmaster to be able to gauge whether or not their site is reaching its intended audience. But I think you can see how they have an enormous potential for spying.

When I installed a site meter on the Junction I had no real intention of letting the statistics get the better of me. At first it was simply interesting to see where in the world all the people who were interested in Jericho were coming from. But I have to admit that after some time I was able to recognize many of you. It got to the point with the Junction that I would come home and check for comments on the blog and then I would immediately check to see where my visitors of that day had come from. It was turning into a very unhealthy obsession. I did not like the effect it was having on me.

I am sorry to each and every one of you whose privacy I violated by spying upon you. I sincerely hope you will believe me when I say that all Meters and Counters have been removed from the Junction. I have learned a valuable lesson about respecting others privacy online and even if these programs allow spying to become standard practice for some; I say to you that it is something that I will not henceforth participate in. You have my word.

Losing everything is like

Goodbye: There have been moments in the past when everyone was sure the board was coming down but this is the closest thing I can imagine to a cathartic fan assisted closing of the final curtain. Fans from all Jericho walks of life have been saying their goodbyes on the CBS boards and creating closure so they can move on. Even if this is not the end, the goodbyes have been said so the true end turns from a spectre of surprise to a guest with an open invitaion whose arrival will signify an era's end. Great job Rangers on beating the network to the punch and saying farewell on your own terms and in your own time.

Where do I find it to make another post? If I thought simply not abandoning all of you would be enough to keep me going, I was wrong. If I thought that by isolating myself so as not to be seen as aligning with any particular side that I could stay connected enough to secure your trust, I am afraid I was wrong again. If I thought I could help my readers to face the dark sides of fandom by revealing them in myself without becoming a casualty, I was wrong. If I thought the truth would set me free, I was dead on.
.
I am free to write a blog or not and my readers are free from obligation to read it. This is good on the one hand because no one wants to feel beholden to something which challenges their opinions of what is right and true. But on the other hand I wish folks would allow themselves to be challenged equally by the truths they so readily accept.
.
I have many of my own tightly clung to truths as well. Some of them I have said aloud and some I have kept to myself. Some of them I am throwing away today because they just are not valuable to me anymore. They do not tell the kind of stories I want to hear or listen to. They reflect a man who got caught up in a movement and almost forgot he was alone. They tell the tale of one who sought approval and worried endlessly about whether it was forthcoming. They spin a conflicted yarn about truth, consequence, failure and flight. I am not shutting down this blog, instead I am shutting down my expectations of what this blog could or should be and I am asking a question: "Why must the show go on?"

Have you ever thought about being a Jericho Blogger?

The CBS board may not be available to us for much longer so I am imploring any of you who are wondering about how the fandom would stay connected to become a landing point for others by starting a blog.
.
Blogging Jericho is a great way to greet new fans. Most any of the theme like threads that are on the first page of the CBS message board could be adapted to a blog. The Welcome Center , The Porch and Welcome new and returning fans are perfect examples. These threads have already adopted a blog like feeling as they attempt to disperse information on what is happening throughout the Jericho Fandom. This type of information would be even more pertinent if CBS were to suddenly disappear.
.
But say we get lucky and the mother board stays. Still it would be good for Jericho if more folks were creating interesting content about the show. Jericho has lost a lot of important bloggers in the last six months or so. This leaves us with less up to date content that is being found over search engines. It is depressing when you search a subject and find only old information about it. It makes you feel as though the thing has been forgotten.

If you have any interest at all I encourage you to go to blogger.com or any of the free blogging sites and look into it. The software is growing easier to use by the day.

Jericho Needs You!

To do what you can to help keep it alive

As most of you know I draw a good many ideas for posts from The CBS Jericho message board and today’s post is no exception. NightShade10 has created an excellent thread entitled “What Can You Do? A Ranger Check List”. In it she breaks down various ways that rangers can contribute to the cause of keeping the show alive and she does so by arranging those ways into three categories. They are: Things to do for Jericho that involve a donation or spending money, Things to do for Jericho that involve nominal cash expenditure and Things to do for free that don’t involve money or supplies, just a computer and your time.
.
It is the last category on the list that I would like to blog about today because this is the method that I have always been partial to for helping the show for practical reasons and to some extent on principle. I should explain myself and say that a brave soul, Kricka, Inspired me this week by revealing that she never made any phone calls on behalf of Jericho for the simple reason that she dislikes talking on the phone to people. The detail which really struck me about her story however is that she kept this something of a secret because she didn’t want anyone to think she didn’t care enough to do it. I think this is an inclination that we all can understand to some extent and it is in this spirit that I say here and now that I do not spend money on Jericho.
.
There are basically two reasons for this. The first is that I am a carpenter who has had my worst year financially since I got into the business. Income is down and prices are up and to be perfectly honest if I were to even approach the subject of donating to a TV show, for which my wife does not even hold the same regard, it could lead to some real problems. The second reason is a little more complex and fortunately for me has always been less relevant than the first. The second reason is that in many ways I am not inclined to on principle. I feel there are entities that should be investing in this show because it is they who stand to profit from its success and that our contribution should end with buying DVD’s and official merchandise if we are so inclined. It makes little sense to me that we should pay to make someone else money when money is so tight. There it is. That is what I have not been saying and doing but what I have been doing is giving something that is every bit as valuable in my opinion. I have been giving my time to the Jericho cause.
.
I hope that my statements do no ring like admonishment of those who donate money to keep this show alive or to the various humanitarian causes which have come to be associated with the show. I respect all of your efforts and investments in whatever capacity and I realize that had someone not paid to send nuts that I would not be here today. Still, I am so excited to see NightShades thread include the donation of time because as I look out over the sea of avatars and screen names that continue to fight I ask myself where would Jericho be if it’s fans had decided it was not worth the kind of time we have given it. The answer I believe is a resounding nowhere. Thank you Kricka for helping me to say something which has been on my mind for a long time.

The passion of the silent ones

On May 22, 2007 a simple man posted a message in the teeming 8 lane highway that was the Save Jericho folder on the CBS Jericho Message Board. His name was jerk-o-cbs and the reason I call him a simple man is because of his sincere and straight forward message:

I do not post much. I am very passionate about Jericho. There must be thousands out there like me that have read every thread and not responded. I read up until I go to bed, I read as soon as I get up. I am a man of few (typed) words. I sent email, snail mail, and honey roasted. My wife and I love Jericho. Bring it back. That's it.”

The post, in my opinion, is nearly perfect and it had an impact. It was an economical and poetic arrow that struck the targeted hearts of the silent, lurking Jericho fans and brought their hands to the keyboards. I was not there in Camp Passion that night but I have read through it and the responses do not stop coming. Here is a one from a poster many of you may know named Swenciler:

“Hi have been lurking since the beginning of the board. I registered but only posted about twice-actually I was kind of frightened of some of the posters after I read the different threads. But since I found out Jericho was canceled-things changed-I faxed, I emailed a lot, I emailed sponsors, CBS, affiliates, snail mailed, bought nuts, and bought nuts again, and contributed to the Variety Ad, Right now I have to catch up because I was at work since 12 and I don't know what has happened. The thread came to be known as PASSION of the SILENT ONES *THE ORIGINAL "CAMP PASSION" JERICHO BOOT CAMP and reading through its beginnings really serves to conjure a palpable sense of the frenetic buzz of the boards; some of the folks who enter the thread almost seem winded. Amazing.

Gail: why do you keep acting like it’s no big deal?

Johnston: I don’t. I’m also trying not to act like a hypocrite.

Gail: This is nothing like what we went through.

Johnston: Oh No? I seem to recall when my mother thought your name was ‘the other woman’. And I ignored her, just the way Eric’s ignoring us. Now, if this is so different, I’m not seeing it.

Gail: It is different because we were barely in our twenties. She wasn’t your wife. And she wasn’t pregnant.
.
Johnston asks Gail if Eric knows. She says no but it won’t be long before father tells son and before Eric and April are standing amidst shafts of autumn light in the Green family living room ending their marriage.

“I didn’t want you to stay with me because of the baby Eric.”
.
“Well I think we’re the only two people who agree on that.”
.
As Eric shuts the door behind him the tiniest convulsion flips thru Aprils body.

Gail goes to Mary Baily with a piece of paper in her hands. She glances at the paper while telling Mary she will never be able to forgive her for dividing her grandchild’s family. Later Mary finds the paper on the chair where Gail had been sitting.

When April dies shortly after as a result of a complication with her pregnancy in the now sub standard med center where she had worked, where she and baby could both have been saved just months before, we, the viewer, become acutely aware that the world this lovers triangle finally plays out in is nothing like anything we can imagine. It deserves to be judged differently and though it takes some time for Eric to realize this through his grief, he eventually returns to Mary. The savage events which follow continue to take reality by surprise to the extent that when we see Eric and Mary walking together to help dig Bonnie’s grave it is completely natural and as though they were meant to be together.

“What the writers did best in that storyline was to have characters that seemed real. All were flawed. I don't usually root for the relationship between the cheaters to work but after April's death I did.”

Eric, April and Mary (Part Two)

I am a child of a divorce which came about as a result of infidelity. Sparing you the details I will tell you that what I witnessed was the demoralization of my mother and her slowly eroding self esteem in the face of a situation she did not entirely understand. I will not dwell on my own history any more here except to say that I recognize my mother in the performance of Darby Stanchfield.

In response to the first installment of this series Clutz12001 wrote: “It seems April had filed divorce papers on "the day before." What else had gone wrong besides Eric's infidelity? Did April already know about Eric and Mary? I suspect she was not as clueless as it seemed on the surface.”
.
Undoubtedly there could be a case made for an Eric and April who had been growing apart for some time. “It seemed both were defined by their careers.” This is an observation made by Debby from South Carolina and yes, perhaps these two were growing apart rather than growing together. Still, with the split focus and obfuscation which comes along with leading a double life mistrust is born in a relationship between two people and I feel that mistrust is evident in April’s looks and mannerisms. She no longer trusts her husband and she refuses to trust her intuition. She has dread in her eyes even as she pulls the divorce papers from the manila envelope in the car. She has discovered she is pregnant and decides she will keep this a secret of her own. At least until she knows what Eric wants without the baby being a factor.
.
Another comment made by Debby was “I think Eric thought he could have both relationships”. This would not be unusual but I have to wonder if this is the case because I feel like the one thing Eric has going for him in all of this is he has made up his mind. I think he is in love with Mary. Here is a scene from episode 1.9 Crossroads:

Eric: Okay, let’s talk.
April: When I, uh…had the divorce papers drafted. I did that because I couldn’t see a future for us, [holds Eric’s hand] but now I can.
Eric: I can’t.
April: What?
Eric: Look, the last thing I want to do on this Earth is hurt you April, but I’m in love with someone else.
April: [gasps] Who?
Eric: Mary Bailey. April, look April….April..I’m sorry
April: No, you don’t get to do this. You son of a bitch. [April walks away]
.
The last thing anyone ever wants to do to someone they care about is hurt them and it is an odd quirk of humanity how often we do just that.

Eric, April and Mary (Part One)

Reading clutz12001’s post on the CBS Jericho Board entitled Jericho Backstory brought me to consider the relationship of Eric Green and Mary Baily. Now, I know for some this is most probably still a sore spot so I intend to tread lightly but only so lightly because I think the writers broke marvelously from tradition with these two.
.
I should set this up for those of you who do not know the Jericho Characters very well. Eric Green is the successful son of the Jericho Mayor. When we meet him he is kempt cocky and judgmental. So much so that his younger brother Jake quips at him “We were both born on third base, quit pretending you hit a triple.” But one gets the idea that it would be very hard for Eric to quit pretending, that pretending is indeed what Eric does best. It is his skill if you will and he uses it to hide a lot more than infidelity.
.
Eric is married to April who is a doctor at the local medical center. They are a picture perfect couple but it seems this may be the only thing perfect about them. When we meet April she is a women confounded by her husbands distance and frazzled by the nagging unspoken truth that something has gone very wrong in her marriage.
.
What April senses but cannot articulate is that Eric is being unfaithful. This is where Clutz’s wouldn’t you like to know back story enters the picture. Just how did Eric Green, Mister right, end up in an affair with the owner of the local tavern. Mary Baily is confidant in life and business but less so in her relationship with Eric. It is revealed to us that Eric has told Mary that he will be leaving April. Mary tells this to her new friend Mimi who retorts “Men like that don’t leave their wives for women like us.”
.
So we are presented with a perfect lover’s triangle. Nothing good can come of it and yet the situation will over and over implore us to do something that might at first be against our better judgement. Another major theme in Jericho is redemption. The writers, through masterful story telling will suggest that instead of looking for proof that people are screwed up that we try looking for proof that they are not.

Military Send Off

Battle imagery and Metaphors of War in the Jericho fandom.

Earlier this week I announced in not so many words I was leaving the Jericho fandom. In response to my doing so KrzyKitty wrote:

“Another one has fallen. As I dig my claws in for the long battle ahead, another ranger calls retreat. With each retreat, the weight of impending doom grows. As each safe house closes, the light at the end of the Jericho tunnel diminishes. I will not falter in my faith, will not give up my hope or resolve that we will win this battle. I am here till the end. God grant peace to the fallen and rest for the weary ones who soldier on…..”

Wow, who said anything about retreat?

The honest answer is, on any given day, it could be just about any of us. Within our ranks war metaphors and battle imagery are about as plentiful as nut jokes. Sometimes the nut jokes and war metaphors have overlapped as evidenced by the friendly "Shelling" of NTN targets and by the early “Not Understanding Term Surrender” Slogan. The Nut/war theme has certainly been visually incorporated into our campaigns:

And who could forget “Mister Peanut goes to War”? This one is apparently a poster from WWII but the significance of Mister Peanut I have not been able to determine. Jericho Fans however gladly attached to it their own meaning.

The evocation of war extends deep into American history as well. Rich Becker and Rubberpoultry collaborated to create this homage to the American civil war:

All along, Jericho and the community surrounding the show have been exposing a thru line in American wars and the countries history. This collaboration it should be noted has been embraced by both sides and the winds of influence have blown both ways. My hat remains forever off to the folks who conceptualized Jericho and the fans who embraced it.

The importance and timely relevance of a show where the central theme is war cannot be overstated. Of course, stories of war are relevant no matter when they are told. They help us to examine, understand and appreciate how seemingly insignificant events can escalate into the unthinkable.
.
Upon further consideration it is no surprise that the language and imagery of war have been adopted by the Jericho fandom. War is to no small degree why we are here huddled in the safe houses and continuing to fight on all fronts.

Who Loves You Baby?

I understand that word has come from the creators of Jericho that they would like to see less money spent on campaigns and that there is much speculation as to why. There have been a number of theories floated on the boards but I would like to offer another here because I feel it simply cannot be overlooked and if true correcting it cannot be emphasized strongly enough.
.
If the folks who make the show watch the boards and have seen discontent lead to anger and eruption and if they have also taken note of fan insistence that only season 3 will do then they may feel that our continuing to invest in Jericho may be leading to eventual disappointment. From there it would not be that big of a stretch for them to imagine us turning our frustration on them if the outcome of their efforts does not jive with our expectations.
.
How would we change this if it were true? It might be time for some Unconditional Jericho Love. We love and respect the creative team behind Jericho and we love the premise so let’s promise to try to keep on loving Jericho. The time between cancellation and now has most certainly shaped the realm of possibilities for the next incarnation so for the good of the many, and out of respect for one another’s investment of time, money and energy let’s be prepared to love whatever new Jericho development comes our way. Then if we do not we will have come by it honestly as the expression goes and we can reevaluate our position at that time.

Even if this turned out not to be the reason for their request what could it hurt to reassure those working hard on our behalf that we appreciate their efforts and are openminded about what they will produce?

Well, Need2No2 of the CBS Jericho Board did just that. She created a thread that leapt like a pop up book from the screen. Here is her first post on that thread in its entirety:

1416 pages later Baily’s is still drawing posts from its virtual patrons. As I write, those patrons have apparently not heard the news that Mary Baily AKA Need2No2 has just placed her name on the wall in a thread that I created barely a week ago. A thread called the Jericho Memorial Park.

The Jericho Memorial park was born from the idea that it would be nice for folks to have a place to post about and remember their ranger friends that are no longer with us on the boards. It did not have a wall as I envisioned it but embellishment is the name of the game on a message board and in a somewhat ironic but not totally unforeseeable twist of fate the Park has become a place for folks to lay down their nuts and call it quits. An act that is fast becoming known as Placing your name on the wall.

So, Mary Baily AKA Need2No2 has done just that this evening and she leaves behind her a tiny URL and a whole heck of a lot of very real memories to be swept up off the virtual floor.

Leading Jericho

I posted this earlier on the CBS board and thought it worth reposting here.

Everyone of us are leaders.
.
This movement is more like an organism than an army. Push here and something on the other side of the fandom begins to move.
.
I read somewhere that highway traffic has a memory of at least ten miles. This means that you having to apply your breaks might be the result of something that is happening miles up the road.
.
I think internet/message board traffic is similar. There is no leader, just each of us in seperate cars with the potential to cause or avert catastrophe.
.
By reading each others posts we become a part of a great chain of time, place, chance and possibilities. And just like in traffic, by how we respond, we have the potential to have a profound effect on one another.
.
We are all leaders who bear a great responsibility to the welfare of the whole.

And now Jericho reader I have a question for you: What would you like this blog to be? Is it at all helpful or entertaining at least to have commentary on events within the fandom or do you see that as more often than not simply throwing fuel upon the fire? Help me to lead the Junction in the direction you would like to see it go. If you readers only want to see Jericho news here presented in a more neutral fashion then I will strive to accomodate you. To be frank, I am no longer sure what this blog should be and need your input.

By coupling a combined effort by international fans to honor General McAuliffe with the controversial NTN movement I believe the stateside leaders of the campaign did the effort a disservice. Participation was tepid at best which is too bad because like a similar situation several months back with the Great Jericho Rewatch this could have been avoided.

Nuts were integral in saving Jericho so there was no need to accompany this campaign with "Friendly Shelling" by the Nuts to Nielsen Crew. In my opinion it was especially dangerous to do so given NTN's obvious ability to divide the fandom. I say it was obvious because it was. Anyone could see it. A good press release could have accomplished the same goal. This is not a reflection on NTN as an idea. Things have divided the fandom before for various reasons. However, if you are looking to amass support for an initiative isn't it is best to let it stand on its own merits and to keep it far from any controversy?

I am not an NTN hater. I actually thought the idea was pretty brilliant. It was a perfectly natural leap to start sending nuts to the company who, by virtue of its shortcomings, has helped to cause the cancellations of so many good shows. But where I think NTN went wrong was keeping its efforts so pinpoint focused on Jericho. It's leaders might have done better to widen the spotlight and recruit fans of other cancelled shows to the effort. Yes, it might have meant that the Jericho cause would have suffered a loss of energy devoted to saving the show but in the end it appears to have lost that anyhow and I am not so sure, had a larger NTN movement taken off, anything would have been lost at all.

NTN could still bring much attention to Jericho as a less Jericho specific movement that continues to pay homage to the show that inspired it. The story after all is legendary and the press will continue to bring up Jericho time and again to explain the significance of nuts.

It now seems that much of the NTN crowd has left the CBS boards. There were some seriously bad moves made by individuals both within NTN and without that helped to bring this about. There is a lot of blame to go around, but I am really sorry this effort to honor General McAuliffe by the International fans was caught in the crossfire.

In college I ran with a pretty tough crowd. Well, for an arts school that is and a fenced in art school at that where my new buddies who were full of angst were going stir crazy. On many a weekend night we ended up way too drunk and literally fighting amongst ourselves. It would start with wrestling and before you know off to the side one of our group would start saying “It’s going to turn real!” And then, of course, to some extent it did…

I had another friend attending the school who was from my hometown. She was a rebel herself but her cause was truth. One night she said to me that she believed the reason we boys fought was to express our love for one another.

My point is that as I have followed these relationships, closely and not so closely, over the last 16 months the fact that we all seem to congregate in conflict is starting to feel as much like love as anything else.

Call me crazy…

Today’s interview with Carol Barbee makes it clear that amongst other possibilities for continued Jericho storylines a graphic novel is a highly possible and very exciting prospect for the creators of the show.

I grew up reading a breed of comic books that were simple no matter how you sliced them. They presented the world in black and white despite the brightly colored, well laid out pages. Nuance was forsaken for grand themes of good and evil and it was never hard to tell who you were supposed to root for. Somewhere around the time I was headed off to college the Graphic Novel started to get a foothold. To mix my mediums and metaphors it was like the blues had had a baby and they named it rock and roll. Suddenly, thanks to visionary authors and artists, the comic book had matured with remarkable swiftness. The stories traded their over simplified landscapes for the key’s to dingy apartments and plush lonely mansions. The previously mentioned spaces are still alive in my memory from my first graphic novel experience. I have been thinking about it a lot of late because the movie of roughly the same name has just now hit the theatres. It was called the Dark Knight Returns and it was written and illustrated by Frank Miller and it was out of this world. Miller showed us what could happen if you took stock, archetypal characters and infused them with relentless reality. Miller’s Batman is a tragic hero juxtaposed against a superman who has become a puppet of the American military. More happened in this story on the first page than I was used to getting from an entire comic. The writing did absolutely no pandering; a fact I appreciate to this day. I remember thinking at the time that often the reasons we love things, such as my love of the comic book, is for the potential they hold inside of them. I am really happy that such potential has not been lost on the creators of Jericho.

On July 2nd, Robin, the Owner/Admin of the Jericho Fan Fiction Board announced to the community that on august 1st the board would close. JT, another admin on the board, contacted Robin and learned that the reasons for the impending closure were money and lack of interest. JT has offered to step up to the plate and take the site over and apparently Robin has agreed. It appears the members of JFF will not lose their home. If you have never visited the Jericho Fan Fiction forum or it has been a while then why not click over there and share in the celebration.
.

The lack of interest aspect in this story is one I hear repeated more and more around the Jericho fandom. Hints and whispers about various sites activity being down are not mere rumors. I can verify that this is the case with Jericho Junction and I know of other folks with access to site statistics who tell a similar story. In a post to the JFF community announcing the reprieve JT says:

“Please note that it was YOUR (OK... an’ mine ) apparent lack of interest that led her decision to close JFF. That means that you (members and lurkers) need to become more active. It’s not enough just to read and enjoy the stories. Unless you are posting/commenting or in some other way showing your interest, this site will eventually go away.”

JT’s signature holds the very honest and straightforward quote: “Will write for feedback.I write, so that others may appreciate, otherwise I would leave it in my head.Writer's Catalog” I understand the sentiment as there have been many times I have spent long hours working on the Junction without knowing if anyone would really care or even notice if it went away.

Ichthus of Jericho Town Hall has been saying for months that it would behoove us to spend more time being fans of the show. Would this include spending more time being fans of the various sites in the fandom? Hopefully and more activity would certainly go a long way toward avoiding further Jericho Cancellations.

We were all tired and frustrated, and Nina had placed the burden of the show's success on us. As she was always the bearer of bad news for us and I felt like we were at her mercy, I just manipulated Poe's work of art into our Jericho story."

Jericho's Fuzzy Future

To say that to some extent Jericho Fans are frazzled would be an understatement. 4 Months have gone by since the cancellation of the show a second time; 4 months of waiting with very little to sustain them. This is no ones fault per se; the producers of the show have been attempting to negotiate new deals for Jericho while continuing on with their daily responsibilities. Such things take time so the fans mission, which they have chosen to accept, is to wait and believe in tomorrow.

The “chosen to accept” part is important here. Yesterday on the CBS message board Cingramaol wrote: “Those of us who are still here, four months post-cancellation, are probably the most hardcore of the show's hardcore fans.” This is true but we have all witnessed and welcomed a slow influx of new fans as well. I can only imagine what it would be like to come into the fandom at this point. They are brave souls who come in with pure excitement for the show and they inspire us to continue.

Of course we have lost a few along the way. The face of Jericho Blogging has changed decidedly over the last 6 months as Jane from the Jericho Monster dropped down to one daily Jericho blog from three and then finally decided to morph the Monster itself into a blog about change in new media. Jane inspired me to begin blogging and I will never forget first getting to know her and realizing just how much content she was taking in and filtering on a daily basis. Her interviews with the fans, cast and crew were ground breaking. Two more Jericho bloggers it appears we have lost are Amber from Watching Jericho and Teresa from the Jericho Bulletin. The latter sadly has completely removed her blog from the web. Kystorms from Jericho on CBS dropped the CBS and also came close to ending her blog. But now I see that MikesMom has been added to the list of contributors to the newly designed Jericho blog. I look forward to reading her posts.

We also nearly lost the popular forum Radio Free Jericho when the owner openminded1 decided it should close. A member, Ka4ist, took it over and with the help of Maybei and a whole host of dedicated mods has overseen its revision and growth. I visited the other day and the place looks great.

I could go on, but that is enough for now. Fuzzy is fine by me as long as we keep moving and in this fandom the movement is the one thing you can really hold onto.

So much of how CBS has handled their online dealings suggests a company that is foolishly looking to get by on the cheap while creating the appearance of being much more together and hip than they actually are. The communities that they themselves expressed a desire to grow around their programming are an unstable and precarious environment and a recent 2 day lockout of the majority of the CBS Jericho message boards residents is a prime example. No attempt was made by the company to communicate a cause for the disruption in service. This either means that CBS does not consider what they are providing in the message boards to be a service (after all we do not pay for it) and therefore no apologies or explanations are necessary or they simply do not have the personnel to handle any problems and communicate about them simultaneously.
.
If it is the former, well, then shame on you again CBS for we do indeed pay a price in the form of loyalty and time invested in your products. This coupled with your cooperation and willingness to invest in us could set off a chain reaction of good will that no other type of publicity could buy. But you must stay invested and not yank these communities out from under people's feet when a show gets canceled. This will mean hiring more moderators along the way but the return will be that all the CBS message boards will develop a reputation for being user friendly and the network will enjoy the long term loyalty of these fans.

But truthfully I think it is the latter of the possible explanations above. I think CBS simply is not investing enough hard cold cash into building their online presence. To this I say, wake up CBS, the internet is about users and growth you are definately not in Kansas anymore but you do have just as much potential to shape and sculpt where you are as any other dot com out there. As Cat Stevens once wrote "You can make it all true or you can make it undo you see…"

Compelling Drama

If it truly is the thought that counts...

...then why do human bother with the gift?

After yesterday's post on the differences between Star Trek and Jericho Debby left this comment:

"The connection I see between the two besides the brought back from cancellation one is that they both are epic stories. Star Trek was not a serial but did tell a story about exploring a new world and so does Jericho but in serial fashion."

I believe this is essentially true. Both shows are epic tales of humanity faced with the unknown. Here are some more similarities which come to mind:

Hawkins and Spock are both outsider characters who operate on many levels at once. They are grounded in logic and yet, seek to understand the nuances of those close to them and their surroundings. Spock is half human by birth and Robert Hawkins has become so by training. With both characters we become heavily invested in their journey.

Equality of the sexes is a theme which runs through both shows. In Star Trek we see this more vividly in the next generation and subsequent spin offs. In Jericho there seems to be a slow unraveling of gender roles until the useless and stubborn attitudes fall away in favor of more practical and mutually beneficial arrangements. Still, I believe Jericho has a golden opportunity to take this further by making Gail Green an active and intelligent leader in the resistance movement which is to come.

Both shows also contain a visionary component emphasizing the vast possibilities for good (and evil) by humanity.

Can Jericho break through to Star Trek Success?

Is it even fair to compare them? Star Trek snowballed into the powerful franchise it is in an age when the shows re-runs were only up against 6 or so other channels of programming. It made it's way to the silver screen in part because of the wildly successful "Star Wars". Each show had a beginning a middle and an end and was independent of the next. Examining these shows side by side they could not be more different. Still, Jericho has already gone boldly where no other show has gone before and if it can pull off a third resurrection then the C in Cult could mean Cash to the company that chooses to back it. Whomever that would be they will need to see Jericho as a new phenomena and market it as such. They should look at what Jericho isn't so they can capitalize on what it is.

Jericho, like the town it was named after, has found itself all alone in the television world and that could prove to be it's most valuable asset.

Jericho: Small Town on the Big Screen?

The first season of Jericho on CBS was groundbreaking. The makers of the show so successfully mixed genres that many who were unwilling to accept aspects were lost along the way. Opinions about the show had a Goldilocks ring: “This episode is too hard” or “This episode is too soft” and finally “This episode is just right”.

For me the episodes were always just right. I loved the way Jericho seemed like a different show at different moments. It allowed me to be the sum of all of my parts as well and the enormity of the subject matter made it easy to drop preconceptions and accept that life can be astonishingly different from one moment to the next. The town was vibrant and alive and by the end of the season threatened by a hostile neighbor.
.
This escalation and then door slamming shut on season one prompted fans to act and we got our second season. But it was to be different than the first; the conflict we had become invested in over the last five hours of the first season was snuffed out in no time at all. Larger, more powerful forces had descended on Jericho and the characters we had come to know so well were asked to shift gears. They did this magnificently within the confines of the seven episode we were allotted. It was not the same show it had been in season one but because of the time spent in character exposition over the course of that first year we still felt like we knew these people. Through the tenacity of the shows creators Jericho exhibited one of the most important aspects of longevity –The ability to change. Most of us allowed our vision of the show to change as well and the community continued to evolve, grow and remain mostly positive through a second cancellation and beyond.
.
Now there is talk of a possible Jericho Movie and I believe this might be just what we need. Granted, it does not bring the friends we love into our homes on a weekly basis but it does allow the story to once again jump to the next level of a national civil war. It allows for new characters to be introduced that are written by the very storytellers we have come to trust. It allows the makers to work more freely from a monetary stand point and to dream bigger for a chapter of the story which frankly needs to be huge. I know the show is called Jericho and that focus on the town and its inhabitants is what many of us desire but it is a fitting metaphor for war that much is lost along the way. On the other hand, war also has a way of getting to the very heart of that which is important and I am confident the creators of Jericho will be keeping this in mind through any of the changes which lie ahead.

Nanny Nanny Boo Boo

I am troubled by the interaction between the fans of Jericho and the author of this post and others online.

First of all I find it very sad how many of those covering television are sighting Nielsens assessment of the ratings for this show as rock solid data. Granted it is the system that networks use to determine a shows future but that does not make it accurate and you rarely hear this conveyed. But more than this, Jericho fans, in an attempt to politely correct inaccuracies, so often post with questionable discretion and in my opinion end up sounding like Jerks. Why do I bypass kinder descriptions and jump right to Jerks? Because that is what the general public is doing as they read our posts. The self aggrandizing and attitude of entitlement I often see coming from Jericho fans is a huge turn off all over the online world.

There are few who care what we have been through and we are not entitled to anything except our opinion. In many cases how we are stating our opinion, I believe, deserves serious introspection.

The troubling trend of deletions at the CBS Jericho Board has given me pause to consider the nature of social networks as they stand and where they might be headed.

In the case at hand there are those who will gladly remind you that the owner of the board and its content is CBS and that by agreeing to the terms of service you have thereby given up any right to hold claim over any content that you contribute. OK, that covers the legal end of things but in the real world it is hogwash. Social networks are communities and communities are made up of people. Not people who are looking to hold the copyright to the post they just authored but people who hold a stake in the relationships they are forming and who value their history.

The CBS Jericho Board has been a less than stellar place to raise your Social Networking Inner Child. Moderation has swung between nonexistent and heavy handed, users have been banned for little or no reason and for months a chat room existed there which frankly was an embarrassment. Even still the strong connections formed amongst the boards residents. People did what they do astonishingly well; thrive in difficult circumstance.

But people are not hardwired to accept adversity without seeking to better the situation. I wonder if the current model of social networking, where a private owner can obliterate whole communities at a whim, will not soon be challenged. There is much inherent responsibility in the act of online community creation and the ethical questions grow more relevant by the minute.

The actor who played the child in Kramer versus Kramer’s name is Justin Henry. While filming the movie there came a scene when Billy Kramer was to cry. Dustin Hoffman used an actors horse sense (And some would say a dirty trick) to enable him to do so. He took Justin aside and pointed out various members of the crew whom through shooting Justin had come to love. He told the child a simple truth of the acting world, that when all of this was over he would not see his friends on a daily basis and many of them he would not see at all. Justin began bawling and they shot the scene.

I have told that story to a lot of folks who think what Hoffman did was cruel but I think that although he was an opportunist he was simply teaching Justin the facts of acting life. The actors we know and love in Jericho will probably not see much of each other once the show is no longer in production and I wonder if many of us in the fandom are not destined to undergo a similar fate. Already people whom I fought side by side with back in June have become less and less a part of my life. Some left because they were fed up and others had real life scenarios to contend with. Some became friends so fast they felt like they always were and others I had to struggle with before befriending. Still others I started out close with but grew apart as priorities led us in different directions. I feel it important to face this as real life has recently had me moving away from the fandom. I feel it necessary to acknowledge that moments have a shelf life and that is why we are required to live them to the fullest. I feel we have done that together and I feel that there are many among us who still are doing so. They call for us to return to the boards and fight on not realizing, I think, that we all move on at different rates and that our moving on does not reflect upon the Jericho movement so much as it simply says that our time has been served. I cannot be in the thick of things daily anymore but I refuse to feel like a failure for it. Another Ranger reminded me tonight that there is no reason to do so.

We have all moved “out of the gray twilight”.

Good Money after Good…

I know I have been pretty much out of things for two weeks now but I have continued to read the boards and I would like to suggest that Jericho fans call a moratorium on asking others to spend money on Ideas to promote Jericho. My strained wallet hurts just reading all of the various ideas as they come along. Times are hard and the last things folks need to feel is that they are less than loyal if they do not put out for the latest, greatest idea to draw attention to the show. I am not talking about DVD’s for the troops. That is a separate, seasonal initiative undertaken by a group of folks who, yes want to promote Jericho but mostly want to provide some respite to our soldiers overseas. I am talking about skywriting and nuts and flowers and ads in more magazines. The Variety ad and the one coming out today in Nielsens own Hollywood Reporter need some time to do their thing. I will not post this on any of the boards and I will not dwell on it further but I believe that for now, money has taken us about as far as it can.

I would hate to think that the great fans of this great show will see hard times ahead because they over extended themselves in their efforts to once again save it.

Jericho Versus Ugly Betty

(And other great internet enedeavors)

There are a ton of things happening to make the internet work for us. Everywhere we go online we are being counted. Someone knows we are there and in many cases someone is trying to sell advertisements based on this knowledge. The computers which make up the internet are always keeping a tally of our presence and therefore simply by keeping the CBS Jericho board busy (Posting or simply reading) we are showing CBS/Paramount we care.

One long running promotional campaign has been to consistently Vote for the Jericho on all the various sites where the show is represented. Flowerlady, Tothal and Jerichofreak to name only a few have kept this effort going since the 9th of June. Jump right in and Join them.

Of those Vote for Jericho sites, the Rich Labonte site, has held a special place in the heart of fans such as Madcanadian and Rodlee. It has been their and many others objective to vote Jericho to the number one spot for months and the march to the top continues with Jericho Currently in 10th place.

Penny Ronning showed us several weeks ago how we could utilize the IMDB (Internet Movie Database) to our benefit if we Start Clicking.

The Rangers who have given their time and energy to promote Jericho on digg.com are too numerous to list. My Friends list includes many of them and you can find new Jericho related content to Digg by checking out their recent activity.

Two efforts are underway to stream Jericho online and have that activity be counted. The first is a weekly rewatch of the series going in succession. This weeks episode is season 1 episode 4 – The Walls of Jericho. The Great Jericho Rewatch was the brainstorm of Dbalcer. The second effort was inspired by the first and was conceived and orchestrated by Nobodysbaby, Karinchu and a whole lot of the CBS board. It is a Comcast Fancast Marathon.

Hey Nielsen is another place where many, many rangers have given their time and talents. They include Artzylady, Azlady, Law 0621 and many others.

If I have left someone out in giving credit for these online efforts I assure you it was not my intention to do so. I did however want to shine the light for a moment on a few of the many active and important members of our campaign.

04/20 - Added Men of Jericho Forum.

In recent days I have shifted my focus strongly to the tangible side of the screen. A combination of family matters, new job acquisitions and things I have been putting off all demand my attention and I can honestly say I want to give it. Like many of the rest of you I have made Jericho my number 1 priority often over the last months and now for the good of myself and that of my family I must step back a bit. This is not a goodbye but I feel as though I owe my compatriots an explanation as to why I am scarce.

I advocate no particular Rally Point and I will do my utmost to maintain the links on this page so if CBS does close we can all find one another.

Before we ever learn that Jake Green believes himself responsible for the death of a 12 year old girl we see him save the life of one.

The Jericho writers draw circles for us.

Consider Bonnie Richmond, shot dead while protecting her home from an armed invasion by Ravenwood agents, had once before been terrorized by another official looking intruder who held a gun to her head. These writers are exceptional at creating the weave of a good story. Even when they are not necessarily trying as I believe was the case with the Bonnie scenario. The creators of Jericho, and here I am including the cast and crew and fans, seem to enjoy a marvelous synchronicity. Unfortunately the coincidence of events which make up the tale of Jericho are not all positive and have even lead some to believe that CBS set the show up to fail but that was another post for another day and all that really matters now is that we want more of this great story. We want to see how Jericho will translate in its next incarnation.

How long can this go on I wonder? How many times can we make history and then be granted for our efforts another round of Jericho action. Protesting, for us, is becoming as regular as the planting of crops. A fitting metaphor for a show based on a rural farming community. More circles to ponder. But the circles, almost as if they were crafted by a Shotz or Barbee, grow larger in diameter and now include exposing the inaccuracies of Nielsen and bearing witness to the birth of ITV. There sure is a lot on the plate of Jericho fans but, given that the show at the heart of our passion shuffles the whole of history and breaks many of the rules of cool, I doubt we would have it any other way.

"The big cable companies, Comcast, Cox Cable, and Time Warner have a co-op called CableLabs (just google it for more info). So maybe that is a possibility. They've never done a joint venture for content, but they do alot of joint ventures for development and advertising. I'm assuming Jericho must be doing pretty well in OnDemand with Comcast for it to be even a remote possibility that CBS is is exploring. I was glad to see a popular Jericho forum sent out a press release which has been getting some awesome media attention but sad to see that the only Jericho related link in the release was for the forum that produced it.

Let’s be honest about this, not everyone in the fandom will utilize this forum.
.
Similarly a great idea came about to re-watch all 28 episodes of Jericho each week on Tuesday nights at a designated time. This could be an amazing web statement if all of us participated and streamed the episodes causing a spike that was focused and undeniable but instead the idea was put forth as connected to a simultaneous chat in one specific chat room.
.
Let’s be honest about this, not everyone in the fandom will utilize this chat room.
.
It seems like almost everyone in this fandom has places in the Jericho network they will not go so how do we include the entire fandom in a new effort to save the show? By thinking BIG and daring to redefine our boundaries, by accepting that our greatest achievements came from working together and by remembering that our own state is as disunited as the colonies Ben Franklin addressed in his 1754 essay Join or Die:

PUBLIC RELATIONS 101:
Don’t forget who brought you to the party!

In my scant few pieces of down-time this week, I’ve worked to put together a post about the disappointment felt not only about Jericho’s cancellation, but also by the way in which the bad news was conveyed to us (or not). During the course of this week – has it been a week already? Boy, time flies when you’re having fun (or not!) – my point-of-view and my words have changed a thousand of times already.

So, this is what I’m going to do: I’m going to post for posterity’s sake my original thoughts, but certainly not belabor them. Why? Because it’s done. Can’t change it, can’t wish it away, can’t dwell too long on the past if we expect to move forward and have half of chance of resurrecting Jericho once again – a topic which I’ll further address in just a moment.

However, my original thoughts are a lesson in how I believe a network should treat fans, especially those of the Jericho ilk. And maybe even more importantly, maybe we will see this as a reminder to ourselves about how we should treat one another. We rise and fall together, and if we ever forget that, the battle is lost.
.
Quickly, let me say that I give my thanks to CBS for giving us Jericho in the first place and then feeding our addictions with the additional seven episodes in the abbreviated Season 2. CBS had no obligation to do that for any of us, but it did, and I am grateful. Without CBS bringing Jericho to us, there would have been no party.
.
On the other hand, as a network leader, I would expect CBS to be a leader for ALL times -- when times are great, when times are bad, and all those other times in-between. While that means acknowledging and celebrating successes, it also means taking full responsibility for your actions and not hiding behind double-speak, mixed messages, the ‘blame game,’ or, worst of all, just hiding.
.
In my over 20 years of working within the public and governmental relations arena, I have seen people, organizations, and companies who have been the truest of leaders and others who were only pretenders.
.
The difference between the two? Those who are most successful and have garnered the most respect are the ones who, first and foremost, recognize the value and the dignity of the individual and have enough humanity about them to understand that people’s feelings do matter.
.
Sure, I’m upset about the cancellation, but I’m a big girl, and like the rest of the Jericho fans, I understand the world of business and economic realities. What is more bothersome, however, is CBS’ not talking to me/us like a grown-up(s) and having the important dialogue we deserve – especially after all the money, man-hours, and emotion we, as non-paid, non-professional marketers, have invested to promote CBS’ product.
.
So, if network leader CBS were actually listening to me, and I had a mulligan to cash in, this is how I would have hoped the network would have honored us (because, after all, we fans brought CBS to the Jericho party, as well). In my perfect world, I would have said to CBS:
.
Don’t release a terse cancellation statement on a Friday afternoon, a little before 5 p.m., and on a holiday weekend to boot. That’s a well-known, over-used trick employed by those who have bad news to impart -- and choose to bury it over a weekend and avoid the inevitable emotional response.

Don’t allow your Friday afternoon statement to the media to substitute for direct communication to your fans. These folks kept the home fires burning for Jericho and CBS for over eight months before the Season 2 debut. They cared enough about the show and its cast and crew to fight to bring it back, and they sacrificed much in their personal lives to do the work that was asked of them by CBS’ Nina Tassler.
.
At a minimum, fans were owed a post on the Jericho Web site, an e-mail to fans whose e-mails CBS possessed, etc.…..something, anything that paid homage to the fans’ loyalty and their wholehearted investment in the network and the show. They are owed the honest heart-to-heart talk from CBS re: economic realities and the affirmation that fans, if addressed properly, can handle the truth.
.
Don’t place the onus of losing Jericho solely and squarely on the backs of fans. We are not professional marketers with unlimited amounts of time and money to expend – especially since all of us have other family, job, and real-life responsibilities that we cannot ignore, no matter how much we love Jericho. We have no control over the faulty Nielsen ratings, the long hiatuses at critical points in the show’s story, the day and time slot in which the show is placed, etc.
.
Despite those challenges, however, we worked with what we were given, and we made history with what we did. Any implication whatsoever that blame should lie, for the most part, at the feet of fans is a true shirking of its own marketing/promotion responsibilities by the network.
.
Don’t allow the lack of network communication to kill momentum; don’t wait till the last minute to seem even the least bit excited about promoting Season 2. The lag time between CBS’ announcement to resurrect Jericho and the announcement re: the exact time of its return could be deemed Purgatory. The silence from CBS was deafening. Yet, frustrate fans were expected to keep the excitement going, while CBS appeared to have no excitement of its own til closer to the Feb. 12th debut of Jericho.
.
Don’t confuse fans with mixed messages. Season finale vs. series finale ‘hints’ in episode-closing voice-overs. A revamp of the Jericho Web site that created a perception of buy-in from the network. Network pronouncements of pride on the online/download numbers vs. Nielsen ratings. The list goes on and on….
.
Don’t rub salt in the wound with headlines on the Web site that shout “It Doesn’t Have to End: You’ve watched the finale…now re-live the entire series online.” Ouch! CBS has never communicated directly to the fans re: the show’s cancellation, and it hasn’t acknowledged the pain it has caused fans who SO believed Jericho could live on at the Tiffany Network. It HAS ended at CBS, so the ‘doesn’t have to end’ line feels a little icky. On the other hand, please don’t take the board and its contents away any time soon!! (See? I am SO conflicted! J)
.
Telling your most loyal, active, and engaged fans – without actually directly telling them -- that you have, once again, canceled Jericho, and though it’s been nice, my friends, it is over…fini…done….not open for debate…not worthy of a direct dialogue…for once and for all, end of discussion: well, let’s just say there are nicer, more responsible, more humane ways to end our date to the Jericho party. Yet, I’m happy that CBS took me there, anyway.
.
That said, I will try to stretch my point re: dignity and respect to include fans’ response. We have to have respect, not necessarily have universal agreement, but certainly show respect for each other and the efforts we need to marshal in order to save Jericho.
.
That means no bashing of CBS, no bashing of other networks that may or may not be considering pick-up of Jericho, and no bashing of each other’s ideas and efforts. We need to practice a little PR 101 ourselves, and remember that each one of us fans involved in this fight is important and deserving of dignity and respect. It takes all of us to create another rockin’ Jericho party.

For those who intend to move forward, there are plenty of places to jump on board and latch on to some good solid efforts: Try the great ideas at GenPatton’s “Homebase: The New Save Jericho Campaign Thread” on the CBS board. JerichoNet2 and JKI are running at full steam with an impassioned Save Jericho campaign. Try Jeritopia and Radio Free Jericho as well, plus other sites like SciFi, CW (in conjunction with Supernatural fans), etc. No matter where you go, just GO…and DO SOMETHING!! I am not ready to let Jericho go just yet. Are you?? The past is the past, so let’s take any anger and disappointment we have felt and move forward to build an even greater Jericho future together.

Where have you been?

I have really enjoyed watching Skeet Ulrich grapple with and fill out the corners of Johnston Jacob Green.
.

From the pilot through episode 29 the requirements of this character have been to bring believability to a most unlikely hero. The Jake we first meet is a shady liar; white lies perhaps but designed to conceal a past which is less and less to his liking. He comes home attempting to turn his life around in episode 1. He needs money, left to him by his grandfather, to help him start a legitimate business. He is the prodigal son for whom a Father and brother seem to have little tolerance. Ulrich plays the role of that early Jake with all the beautiful nuances of a man hitting his thirties and discovering he is very unhappy with the direction his life is going. He has a confidence level that rises and falls depending on who he is talking to and how they are connected to him. These interactions seem to be informed by a real history and are the root of the “Hallmark” Like scenes that some people say turn them off of Jericho. This town and these people feel like our neighbors which is partially why I think some folks are disturbed. Ulrich is heartbreaking as Jake because anyone who has ever failed at something can see themselves in him. Had bombs not destroyed 23 American cities there is no telling where Jake would have gone after leaving Jericho.

But the world goes mad on that day and the character of Jake comes back to his hometown again, this time driving a school bus full of children he has saved. Jericho, the show, almost lost me here but Ulrich amazingly pulls it off. He down plays the action hero stereotype to a point that a really amazing television character is born. A hero who balances his redemption and regret so realistically that we are left cheering each time he himself cannot believe what has just taken place. A hero who even when paired with Robert Hawkins refuses to lose his autonomy and a hero who can fly a plane or go to war with a neighboring town and still seem like someone we know.

Thanks to a masterful performance by Skeet Ulrich the character of Jake Green is a refreshing take on the hero inside of us all.

As many of you already know I do not watch Jericho on television. I gave up my TV about 15 years ago because I found it to be a distraction. I have a hard time holding a conversation when a TV is on in the room. In that time I really got out of touch with what was on the tube. I heard about the big shows of course because coworkers always seem to be discussing television. Feeling left out used to make me a little sad but since I began watching shows online I have not felt left out. Now I can discuss shows with the best of them. But there is one thing I cannot do and that is feel the communion of watching Jericho at the same time as you TV viewers. I will have to wait til tomorrow which normally would be just fine but tonight I find makes me just a little bit sad.-03/25/08
